Smith Lake, Olympic National Forest

Page 2

Journal entry September 1998.

Below a national park deer munches away at the foliage.  The deer are not hunted in this part of the forest and don't consider humans much of a threat.

Snow field in the forest on the North side of the mountain.

We go across the snow and head up toward a beautiful meadow..

Even more late season snow.  This beautiful playground is all ours.  We leave the first tracks by humans in the snow.

 King of the hiking dorks!

Mike models shorts and long underwear, the hikers fashion standard.

Looking down into an old avalanche shoot.  The forest floor is nearly impassable so we stay on the ridge.

Flapjack lakes.  We pass them by and ascend into Smith Lake for our basecamp.

Richie "Chief" Goodall munches out.

Check this, that's Joe in the tree on top of this narrow ridge.
