Curt’s
Corner is a periodic movie review written by Curt Burbach of Clackamas, Oregon
Must Love Dogs:
Although this is a typical feel-good, romantic comedy, I must say it was quite funny. It was written with a very quick wit, and I appreciate that. I give it 2 ½ bones out of four for being above average.
The Great Raid:
This is the true story of a very important mission that took place during the end of WWII. The movie itself was only slightly compelling. However, it was great military history lesson that will teach and remind everyone as to some of the reasons why the United States was so anxious to end the war with Japan. If you notice, in the news these days, the Japanese government is apologizing for its country’s conduct during WWII. Anyway, I give the film 2 ½ bones for being above average. Again, it was only slightly compelling, but a very good tribute to those involved, that needed to be told.
The Constant Gardener:
This movie was filmed very well, and the acting was top-notch. It was, however, only a little bit compelling, as it was only a little thrilling, and a little mysterious. I’m sure it could have been a fairly interesting book. Overall, it was just average and I award it two bones.
Lord of War:
This film is part parody, part tragedy, part history lesson, and part civics lesson. Nicolas Cage does very well by not over-acting. I give it 2 ½ bones for being above average.

Steel Magnolia’s:
I have long been told that this is the mother of all chick flicks, and now I can see why. It came out in 1989 and sports an all-star cast of wonderful actresses who all give outstanding performances. The writer developed this story based on his sister’s real life experiences, as it was both a tear-jerker and very funny. So, I give it three bones for good writing and very good acting.
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers:
This was actually very interesting. It was made by HBO and came out in 2004. For those of us who watched Peter Sellers, even if only occasionally, you can appreciate how this story reveals the rise and fall of this often misunderstood man. Many aspects of his life are described, which turns out to be extremely dysfunctional. 2 ½ bones for being above average.
