Curt’s Corner is a periodical movie review written by Curt Burbach of Clackamas Oregon.
I
was hoping this film was going to scare me. But instead, it creep’d me out,
because it was VERY eerie. I love that! Also, director Steven Spielberg did a
great job of showing the aliens and their machines. It was very well filmed, and
the special effects were extremely well done. Critiques of this film need to
understand that this is a Sci-Fi movie, first and foremost, so lay off the
character development. Sci-Fi enthusiasts should like this one a lot. Spielberg
and the producers were at a disadvantage because everyone already knows the
basic plot outline. Yet, they were still able create a haunting experience.
Actor Gene Barry played the lead role in the movie release of this story back in
1953. He was given a very small cameo appearance in this one; see if you can
spot him. I give the film three bones
out of four for being good.
This film reminded me a lot of Seabiscuit (2003), because they both take place during the depression, they both climax into a competition, both movies had a documentary flare to them, and both stories were told very well. The filming in Cinderella Man was outstanding, and the acting was absolutely superb. Renee Zellweger will no doubt get nominated for best actress, and may very well win. Paul Giamatti SHOULD get nominated for best supporting actor, and SHOULD win. Russell Crowe was his usual outstanding self. I think Ron Howard will be nominated for best director and the film for best picture. Howard did a great job of capturing the emotions of the story. Oh, and did I say the writing was outstanding too? This film is another great achievement for all those involved. I give 3 ½ bones for being a very good film.
This movie was as much a comedy as it was an action film. I thought it would be just another cheesy, shoot-em-up, blow-em-up, picture with a flare of romance. But I was wrong. See this movie for the comedy aspect of it, and I’m sure you’ll laugh (if you’re an adult). You could wait for it to come out on disc. I award it three bones for being good and funny.
As far as Batman movies go (and there’s been five of them now), this film is one of the best, if not the best. But it was still Batman. It should make a lot of money for the producers though. There wasn’t anything outstanding about it. Over all I’d say it was above average and I give it 2 ½ bones.
Yes, this is a major chick flick. But it was a good part for Will Ferrell to play, because he got to act goofy in many different ways and even was allowed to show his dramatic side for once. Keep in mind, some of Robin Williams’ best work has been in dramatic roles, and I suspect that Will Ferrell with eventually end up there too. Anyway, Nicole Kidman did a good job and I chuckled a few times. I give it just two bones for being average.

This was produced, directed by, and it starred Kevin Spacey. You can tell he had fun making it. This was the life story of entertainer Bobby Darin. It was fun to watch and gives a good tribute to a historical figure. But it was just average as there was nothing really compelling about it. I give it two Bones.
This is a film that came out last year and stars John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson, who was nominated for a Golden Globe Award as Best Actress. It’s based in New Orleans and is about relationships and regret. Although I found it to fairly interesting, it really is just average. Don’t rent it unless you’re desperate for something. Two bones.
