Curt’s
Corner is a periodic movie review written by Curt Burbach of Clackamas, Oregon
The Interpreter:
Stars
Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. The acting was decent. The plot was decent. The
action flow and suspense was decent. This may sound a little anal on my part,
but I thought the film editing was poor. When you watch it, perhaps you’ll see
what I mean. Overall, I thought this film was above average and I give it 2
½ bones out of four.
Crash:
This
is the best movie that I’ve seen so far this year. It addresses the racial
bias of the Los Angeles area, and how it affects people; from the politicians,
to the police, to the criminals, to average citizens, to the minorities. It
consists of an ensemble cast and was directed and filmed very well. I would like
to see the screenplay writer get nominated for an Oscar. It may even get
nominated for best picture. I award it 3
½ bones for being very good.
Kingdom of Heaven:
This
was a good history lesson that over-dramatized the truth (how very Hollywood).
The filming was outstanding; look for an Oscar nomination for cinematography.
But, overall I’d say this big-budget production was above average, and I give 2
½ bones.
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith:
This
was by far the best Star Wars movie of the last three. The special effects were
top notch, and I very much enjoyed the story-line. There were some acting
performances that I thought were sub-standard, but overall, I thought it was
good. I give it three bones.
The Longest Yard:
This
is a re-make of the 1974 smash hit that helped launch Burt Reynolds career. This
film was just as good, if not funnier, that the original. I’m sure you will
laugh quite a bit, even if you know what is going to happen. I award it three
bones for being a good comedy. And, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a good
comedy.

The Deep End of the Ocean:
This was a darn good movie, for which I didn’t expect. It came out in 1999 and stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Treat Williams, and is part mystery, part tragedy and part socially educating. It was like three scripts abbreviated into one, and gives plenty of topics for the viewers to discuss. I recommend you rent this one, as I give it three bones.
Ocean’s Twelve:
I didn’t have much hope for this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a lot of fun to watch. The story line gets a little complex, so it’s good to watch it on tape or disc to allow for pauses. I award it 2 ½ bones and call it above average.
