Curt’s Corner is a periodic movie review written by Curt Burbach of Clackamas, Oregon.

This is the time of year when many good films come out – for two reasons. First, to cater to the holiday crowd. Second, to purposely release them at the end of the calendar year so they will be fresh in the minds of those voting for the Academy Awards.

Walk The Line:

This wasn’t just the story about Johnny Cash’s rise to fame and all the trials and tribulations thereto. No, it was mostly about the love that developed between Cash and June Carter while Cash was still married. Hence the name, Walk The Line. The acting was superb as the story was very entertaining. I anticipate Academy Award nominations for best picture, best writing, best directing, best actor, best actress, and maybe even best sound mixing. The lead actors performed their own singing in this very good film, and I give it 3 ½ bones out of four.

Capote:

The primary reason I went to see this is because I had heard that the performance of the lead actor, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, was outstanding. And, I wasn’t disappointed. But what really surprised me is just how interesting the rest of this film was - I didn’t expect it to be this good. This story spans the timeframe that Truman Capote spent while researching the facts for his non-fiction blockbuster, In Cold Blood. Capote became the most popular writer in America after its release.

I always found it quite irritating to listen to Capote’s voice. But, I can’t ignore the historical fact that he was one of the best novelists of the 20th century. And, by the end of the movie, I had grown accustom to his inept squeal.

This film was also very good, and I also anticipate that it will be nominated for best picture, best writer, best actor, and possibly best support actor. 3 ½ bones!

Sin City:

I enjoyed this one. It was like a comic book made real. Some people may say it was too violent – but I thought it was OK, since it’s actually very comic book like. The filming was unique, and story line fun. I bet the actors had fun making this. I give it 2 ½ bones for being above average.

The Usual Suspects:

This film came out in 1995 and sports a nice collection of very good actors – including two who will go on to win Oscars. It has s fairly interesting plot and a nice little twist at the end. Overall, I liked it and I give it 2 ½ bones for being above average.
