Waldo Lake

Journal entry September 2010, Waldo Lake.

I return to Waldo Lake once again, this time solo, for some relaxation and thorough exploration on the west side of the lake.

Below you can see I'm loading up on the dock at Shadow Bay boat ramp.  One of the greatest improvements in the lake over the past few years is the banning of internal combustion engines on the lake.  The lake is small enough to paddle the circumference in a day so engines really are highly unnecessary.

The lake is immensely clear but I always bring my own water rather than to filter it.  Below is the entire loadout for the trip.  A pretty easy pack for a change:

Crossing the lake in the rain.  The shore seems elusive and keeps moving away as I approach it:

Buzzing along the western shore I'm looking for a campground I've used before.  Rain squalls kind of hinder the search as it's difficult to tell just how close the shore is:

The first small peninsula appears to my left:

As the water comes up shallow along the shore the characteristic deep blue color overcomes the gray sky:

After a night in the rain I get a pretty good camp set up, get some coffee on and start a good breakfast.  To save hassle at dinner the night before I just had freeze dried:

Somewhere out there is a lake.  At around 5000 feet I'm probably in the middle of a cloud that's just hanging at ground level:

Looking south to the little bay next to my camp:

The whole camp.  Lots of room and pretty dry. The only sounds were the wind in the trees and the lapping of water on the rocks:
