John Day River

Journal entry; Friday May 19, 2006, John Day River a few miles below Service Creek, Eastern Oregon. Here's Jen pulling up the raft at our first camp site. Due to shuttling and the long drive we had a late start and only paddled (or rowed in Jen's case) a couple of hours the first day. But we found an excellent camp spot right on the first try.
The firewood was already collected for us. We didn't need it as it turned out.
Our luxourious camp includes a tent for every person, lounge chairs, a Coleman stove and table to cook on. Below Travis is pointing out the birds while we prepare tacos.
My gear, hung on a tree. Hey, it was wet and I didn't want to put it in the tent!
Here's the evening view from our camp. A nice day's close to a long day of driving, packing and paddling.
May 20th, we break camp after breakfast. Things are a little damp, but it's still warm.
Russ snaps the spray skirt on for today. Most all of the big rapids will be in this day's travel. Our gear is tied down secure, we have air bags fore and aft, and we're enclosing the boat as yet another precaution. In comparison you can see Travis is carrying a handkerchief and a half full bottle of water in his solo on the left.
