Five Mile Lookout

Page 1

Journal entry Monday February, 12 2006.  We have rented a fire lookout tower formerly used by the Forest Service to watch the horizons for smoke.    Now in it's after-life the tower provides a comfy cabin in the snow covered wilderness.  We drive into Billy Bob Snow Park and load out for a 2 to 3 mile trek up to the tower.

A great start!  Right out of Billy Bob we glide down a nice easy hill carrying only a ton or so of gear.   We've got steaks, eggs, pancake batter, spaghetti, bacon, potatoes, some extra clothing and a couple of other things.  Since we have no idea what to expect for snow we bring both snow shoes and cross country skis.  You can see Dave loaded up in the below picture.  Joe is gliding away in the distance.

As you can see I have left out nothing.   I packed so much stuff it took me most of the day to find my sunglasses.

Below you can see Joe left nothing out either.  We're starting the long trek up the hill to the lookout.

We cross over a fallen tree.   In the summer I'm sure people just drive up to the lookout.  That's a real back country experience I'll bet.

Joe slogs on.  The scenery  is beautiful.

Nearing the top, the terrain levels off.
